Sharing

You can share an artist, album, or track with anyone, even if your Aurral is only on your home network.

  • Artist: open the artist page, select the more actions button, then Share artist.
  • Album: open the album page and select the share button.
  • Track: while a track plays, select the share button in the player.

On a phone, or a browser with a share menu, Aurral opens that menu so you can pick an app. Otherwise it copies the link. If the browser blocks copying, which can happen when you open Aurral over plain http://, select Open link and copy the address from the new tab.

The link opens a page on aurral.org with the cover art, the title, and links to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, TIDAL, and Deezer. A track can also have a 30-second preview from Deezer. Messaging apps show the art and title in the link preview.

If your friend runs Aurral too, they can select Open in my Aurral to go to the same artist or album on their own server and add it there. Their browser remembers their Aurral address, and it is never sent to aurral.org.

In Library, open the menu on an artist, album, or track and select Share artist, Share album, or Share track. Sharing a track that is playing from your Library works the same way. This opens a share window. Select Share link there to send the regular link, or turn on Play from my Aurral to let anyone with the link play the full music from your Library.

  • Allow downloads adds a download button for each track, and Download all for an album or artist. Downloads are the original files, so a whole artist can be large.
  • Expires sets when the link stops working: in 1 day, 7 days, or 30 days, or never.

Select Create link, then Share link to send it.

An artist link includes every album of that artist in your Library, including albums you add later. Music in flows is never shared.

Your music travels from your server to your friend through a temporary Cloudflare tunnel that Aurral opens while at least one link is live. Your friend’s browser connects to Cloudflare, so your home address stays hidden. Nothing else on your server is reachable through the tunnel. The Docker image includes the cloudflared program this needs. If you run Aurral another way, install cloudflared yourself. A link can take a minute to start working after Aurral starts.

Your server has to be running for the link to play. If it is off, or the link has expired or been stopped, the page says the music isn’t available to listen to right now and still shows the other links.

Cloudflare offers these tunnels for free without an uptime guarantee, so treat listen links as a convenience.

Your links are listed in Profile → Shared links, with when each expires and whether it allows downloads. Select Share link to send one again, or Stop sharing to end it right away. When no links are left, Aurral closes the tunnel.

A share link holds the item’s name, its artist and album names, and its MusicBrainz IDs. A listen link also holds a random code that identifies your Aurral to aurral.org and a random code for that link. It contains nothing else about you or your server: no address, username, file path, or library contents. Anyone with the link can read those names, and anyone with a listen link can play it until it expires, so treat it like any message you send.
